The "Save the Next Bright Star" basketball tournament is held in memory of Daniel E. Rumph II, a star basketball player for Western Kentucky University who passed away suddenly after a pick-up basketball game at Mallery recreation center in Philadelphia. No one at the gym was trained in CPR and there was no Automated External Defibrillator (AED) present. Both could have helped save his life.

The Daniel E. Rumph II 5th Annual "Save The Next Bright Star" Basketball tournament is held to raise money to purchase AED's that are placed in Philadelphia Area recreation centers. Danny passed away from a heart disease called Hypertrophy Cardiomyopathy (HCM). The same disease that took the lives of Hank Gathers (Loyola Marymount) and Reggie Lewis (Boston Celtics). Cuttino Mobley has played 12 NBA seasons with HCM but was recently forced to retire after discovering that his condition had become worse. HCM is a structural heart defect that is considered the most common cause of death in young athletes.
